For the last four years, T-Mobile has been just battered by the iPhone. Unable to ink the same deals with Apple as AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon to get the Jesus Phone on their networks at a subsidized price, T-Mobile tried to sell itself to AT&T, only to have the deal killed by the FCC.
In desperation, T-Mobile tried a new approach: they decided to call themselves an “Un-carrier” and start offering untraditional no-contract, upgrade-anytime-you-want plans. And you know what? It’s really paying off for them.
T-Mobile just posted its earnings for Q2 2013, and the results are very rosy. T-Mobile saw its strongest growth in the last four years, and had added 685,000 new subscriptions to its network. Overall, they’ve seen 1.1 million new customers, with the remainder being comprised of pre-paid.
Even crazier? T-Mobile’s phone sales have gone through the roof. They sold 4.3 million smartphones last month, a year-over-year growth of 71%.
Obviously, T-Mobile CEO John Legere chalks the success all up to Un-carrier. “T-Mobile’s Un-carrier approach has clearly resonated with consumers,” he said in a statement. “By fixing the things that drive them mad, like contracts and upgrades, and freeing them from the two-year sentences imposed on them by our competitors, they are choosing the new T-Mobile in unprecedented numbers.”
Obviously, T-Mobile is on to something here. The likes of Verizon and AT&T are already copying their early-upgrade approach. T-Mobile may not have the iPhone “officially” in the sense of a subsidized deal with Apple, but it’s quickly becoming one of the best networks to use your iPhone.
